Per què de nit el cel és fosc?

Si l’Univers és infinit, aleshores el cel nocturn hauria de brillar tant com el del propi dia. Ja que en qualsevol direcció que miréssim, hauríem d'acabar veient una estrella; ja que al ser infinit l'Univers, també hi ha un nombre infinit d'estrelles.
Tot i que la brillantor de cada estrella disminueix en proporció al quadrat de la seva distància de la Terra, el nombre d’aquestes ha d’augmentar en proporció al quadrat de dita distància.

La solució de la paradoxa descansa en la identificació de certs supòsits i que estan equivocats. Tals com la cosmologia del Big Bang, en la qual l’univers no és infinit. Aleshores, encara que l’Univers fos més antic, el cel seguiria essent fosc degut a que el temps de vida de les estrelles lluminoses és massa curt.
