La forma occidental de respondre a l'esternut amb "Jesús!" data de l'any 591, quan Itàlia era assotada per una malaltia epidèmica, els primers símptomes de la qual eren els esternuts.
Per això, el papa Gregorio I va fer que els cristians diguessin alguna invocació com "Jesús!" o "Salut!" per a tractar d'espantar la terrible malaltia.
Amb això s'inicià la tradició romana de saludar amb una benedicció l'esternut, amb la intenció d'eliminar del cos possibles malalties.
