Un cranc amb quatre ulls i sang blava

El cranc de ferradura (Limulus polyphemus) anomenat també cranc rei, cassoleta o cranc baioneta en realitat no és un cranc, sinó un llunyà parent de l'escorpí i l'aranya.
La seva forma ha romàs sense canvis al llarg d'uns 300 milions d'anys, pel que se'l considera un fòssil vivent.
Si se'l fereix, la seva sang blava (color degut al coure de les seves proteïnes captadores d'oxigen) s'endureix ràpidament davant les toxines bacterianes eliminant qualsevol infecció.

Pot suportar fins a un any sense alimentar-se i resisteix temperatura i nivells de sal extrems.
Té dos parells d'ulls (quatre en total), uns compostos i altres sensibles a la llum ultraviolada, i sota la cuirassa té altres cinc òrgans fotoreceptors

Amb el seu aspecte cuirassat i espinós semblen monstres temibles, però són d'allò més inofensius.
Una vegada a l'any es reprodueixen massivament a la platja i utilitzen el punxó de la seva part del darrere per a redreçar-se quan la marea els volteja.
El que més fascina és la seva forma, compacta, robusta i d'alguna manera misteriosa, antiga.
