L'any de 366 dies que excedeix en un dia a l’any normal se li diu "any de traspàs". Aquest dia de més es posa al mes de febrer, que passa de tenir 28 dies a tenir-ne 29.
En castellà es diu "año bisiesto", que prové de "bis sexto calendas martias", nom que els romans donaven al dia 25 de febrer quan l’any era de traspàs.
Assessorat per astrònoms, Juli Cèsar va reformar el calendari romà del rei Numa Pompilio, i degut al retard que aquest representava respecte l’any del sol, va afegir cada quatre anys un dia mes. Però aquesta reforma produïa una errada d’un dia cada 128 anys.
Va ser el Papa Gregori XIII, en la seva reforma coneguda com a "calendari gregorià" on va establir que per que un any fos any de traspàs calia que les dues darreres xifres de l’any foren divisibles per 4, i a més a més, que l’any no acabes amb dos zeros; i en aquest cas solament es consideren anys de traspàs els divisibles per 400.
Exemples: l’any 2044 serà any de traspàs perquè 44 es pot dividir per 4; l’any 2001 no ho va ser perquè 01 no es pot dividir per 4; el 1900 tampoc perquè acabava en dos zeros i al dividir aquest nombre entre 400 no dona un número exacte, però en canvi el 2000 si que ho és perquè encara que acabi amb dos zeros si que és divisible pel 400.
L'any 2008 també ho és perquè 08 és divisible per 4.
